Exams...What do you think about them?

"... exams play on a law student’s world like some weirdly orbiting moon. They are always in sight; but while they’re at a distance, they serve merely to create the tension which swell daily like tides – to read, to keep pace, to understand. As exams draw close.... their gravitational force starts to shake the whole place to pieces...

We were all stopping each other now at lunch, in the hallways, to ask questions about cases and concepts we’d covered at the beginning of the term. And the study groups were growing more active. Some people preferred to work alone, either because they did not want to rely on others, or simply because they felt they learned better independently. But by now, most of the members of the section had found their way into groups, almost all of which were meeting a number of times every week to swap information and outlines and to work out past tests.

As we entered the last week of the term... most of the students at the law school seemed to abandon any effort to maintain a brave front in the face of exams. The evidence of great apprehension was wide spread. Whenever I visited the library, there were long lines before each of the Xerox machines, as people waited to copy earlier editions of the red books or Law Review articles which were said to offer particularly trenchant digests of the material in various courses. Everybody around the school seemed to be fretting aloud that they would never catch up in their class work in time to make a thorough review..."

Questions for Discussion:

Exams are a waste of time! All they measure is how good you are at memorizing things.

Exams are important. They test how well you take in information and how you manage to
interpret it and put it to use.

What can I say -- I agree with both this statements! Exams are not a waste of time in the scence of this word, but if you want to know how well you take in information, there should be other way than these stressing moments of our lives!!!

Its really a difficult question whether exams are waist of time or not. On the one hand it is. Students feel stress while having exams. They fell nervous and sometimes thay can get a mark they dont really deserve. So exams are not always a flaction of your knowledge.

Time of exams is very stressful, but it is also a tremendous opportunity to generate your ideas, energy, knowledge. It is time of innovation and creativity for writing and hidding cribs, for new methods of learning, for making the process of your studying faster and more efficient. I like exams, cause I can summarise my knowledge, build a certin system, show and develope my abilities and potential, but I hate exams, because it is a terrific opportunity for teachers (not for all but for most)to take revenge, because students were absent or unrespectful, or just because they have bad mood or persanal problems. To be honest, I am always successful at my exams, cause I like the process of studying, I like my future profession, but i hate the process of passing, it makes me mad when I see injustice and subjective evaluation of teachers. Are the exams a waste of time? For me they aren't, but for most they are, cause of many flipsides.

Perhaps for someone the phrase, that exams are a waste of time sounds like rubbish, and the arguments for are really imposing, for example that it is the right and the only way to check students knowledge. But it is not true. Because the way exams are held makes lots of students feel nervous, and as a result they are not able to show the examiner their knowledge even if they are well prepared, while some of students can get high marks without proper preparation due to their luck and psychological abilities. And sometimes the examiners are not objective.
All that stuff makes me angry and pisses me off and I never enjoy the night before exams it is terrible.

I consider, that exams aren't a waste of time - but still, we don't need to put marks. Because sometimes marks doesn't reflects the degree of knowledge. ) Teachers need just to say: "congradulations, you've passed!" of "you'd better to try one more time!"
And the results should be said after all members of the group passes the examinational interview.
